GASSY? BLOATED?… SO AM I

Gas and bloating is something that many people struggle with on a daily basis. Some cases are minor and some are chronic. There are many causes to gas and bloating such as: eating or drinking too fast, chewing gum, drinking sodas or drinks with carbonation and smoking.

I, myself struggle with gas and bloating quite often and sometimes it is very uncomfortable and can effect my mood until I feel relief. I’ve tried consciously to do everything that I can to prevent it but because I have a desk job I cant move as much as I am used to or would like to. My lunch breaks are also only 30 minutes so it doesn’t give my mind or body enough time to eat slowly to prevent extra gas build up.

The recommended tips for prevention include:

  1. Eating and drinking slowly
  2. Avoid carbonated drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)
  3. No gum or hard candies
  4. No smoking
  5. Moving often
  6. Eliminating foods high in fiber to see if there is a difference

Out of all of the tips above I can say that number 3 is huge for me. I stopped eating gum almost six years ago and it has changed how I feel dramatically. Now when I eat gum, it instantly gives me gas and makes me bloated so I only chew it for a few minutes and then I have to spit it out. I used to work two retail jobs before my current job in which I was on my feet the entire day so I moved and got plenty of exercise. I don’t smoke so that has never been an issue but I do crave carbonation quite often and I know that has a lot to do with my irritation and bloating so I try to limit myself per week.

In my research I have also found that there is also a condition called Aerophagia which is swallowing when feeling nervous even if you’re not eating or drinking. I have noticed that I do that as well when I am nervous so that is something that I am really going to have to work on as well.
